Open Studio Policies & Rules
Welcome to Mitt Studio. These open studio & membership policies and rules help keep our shared space safe, welcoming, and fair.
Working Independently
- Pottery wheels: Use a wheel independently only if you have prior experience. Wheels can not be used during our wheel workshops, please check our workshop schedule or check with staff. Generally the wheel workshop is every Wednesday and Saturday Morning 10 am - 1 pm.
- Learning together: Sharing tips and ideas is welcome, but private or unofficial lessons, including verbal or hands-on instruction, are not permitted during studio time. If staff determine that a lesson is taking place, the fee is 500 baht per person receiving instruction and 1,000 baht for the person teaching.
- Respect: Be mindful of others’ space, time, and concentration. Everyone is welcome, regardless of ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, beliefs, or body type. Harassment and discrimination are not tolerated.
Workspaces, Tools, and Work in Progress
- Workspaces: Available first-come, first-served, with no reservation needed. If your preferred space is occupied, you may use another available area while you wait. Use one workspace at a time and clean it fully before moving.
- Shared tools: Do not reserve tools or clay. Return tools after use and tell staff if anything is missing or broken. Never leave sharp tools or sponges in a sink; remove anything that falls in while cleaning.
- Sinks: Keep sink time brief when others are waiting; a large sponge or bucket at your workspace can help save water.
- Wareboards: Choose one that fits your piece and wipe it down before returning it. Move other artists’ work by its wareboard, never the piece. Ask staff for help making space around someone else’s greenware; do not touch it.
Shelves and Stored Work
- In-process work — 2 weeks: Keep wrapped or unfinished work on the wet-work shelves inside the styrofoam box for up to 2 weeks from the date it was made. Write your name or Instagram/Facebook handle and the date on a tape and stick to the area next to it. You may update the date only after returning to work on the piece. After 2 weeks, work may be recycled; unlabeled work or unsigned, bone-dry work may be recycled or discarded.
- Bisqueware — 1 month: Collect or continue working on bisque-fired pieces within 1 month of kiln unloading. You may request a hold of up to 3 months. Unclaimed work may be discarded, used for glaze tests, or sold as studio seconds.
- Finished work — 6 months: Collect glaze-fired pieces within 6 months of kiln unloading. Unclaimed pieces may be discarded or sold to support charity.
Firing and Kiln Room
- Fee: Pay in advance; fees are based on each piece’s height and width. Please refer to Pricing Chart in the studio. Do not place unpaid greenware on the greenware shelf—it cannot be fired until paid for.
- Drying: You may lightly wrap work on the wet-work shelves to slow drying. You may also prepay for a leather-hard piece and leave it wrapped on the designated shelf. It will be fired only when completely dry.
- Schedule: Firing is generally first-come, first-served. Work made at Mitt Studio is typically fired within 1–2 weeks, depending on drying, kiln capacity, and studio volume. We do not send individual completion notifications for open studio work; please check on your pieces. For a deadline, speak with a Studio staff. We’ll try to help but cannot guarantee a firing date.
- Partially glazed work: Leave it on the designated glaze shelf and notify our staff when pieces are glazed.
- Accidental damage or missing work: If you damage another artist’s work, leave your contact information so you can discuss it with them. Mitt Studio cannot compensate for broken work, though staff can help mediate serious situations. Keep track of your pieces; a firing-fee refund for missing work may be considered but is not guaranteed.
Firing Fees and Results
- Outside Clay: Work made entirely at Mitt Studio qualifies for in-studio bisque and glaze firing rates. Outside clay or glaze needs staff approval before use or firing. Show staff a photo of the material information confirming its firing temperature.
- Firing risks: Results are unpredictable. Firing fees still apply if work cracks, explodes, or turns out unexpectedly; these outcomes are not refundable. Reduce risk by compressing and supporting forms, avoiding carving or trimming overly dry clay, aiming for walls around 0.5–2 cm thick, and testing unfamiliar clay-and-glaze combinations.
- Glaze safety: Remove all glaze from piece bottoms. Pieces with glaze on the bottom will not be loaded. Unusual shapes require advance approval and artist-supplied supports. If glaze melts onto a kiln shelf, an additional fee applies per piece based on the size of the melt.
- Re-fires: You may re-glaze and re-fire work at the regular glaze firing fee. Re-fires have slightly lower scheduling priority; external work receives no re-fire discount.
- Kiln damage: If your piece causes major damage to kiln equipment, you will be asked to cover it. If it destroys another maker’s artwork, you will also be asked to compensate them for their time and work.
- External work: Collect external work within 2 weeks of kiln unloading or your pickup notification.
Cleaning and Safety
Cleaning is part of your studio time. Follow the posted checklist, including the floor.
- Control dust: Clean clay and glaze spills before they dry. Never dry-sweep or dry-sand indoors. Lightly wet the floor before sweeping; sand outside while wearing a suitable dust mask.
- Leave your space clean: Wipe surfaces and tools, squeeze out your sponge, give everything a final wipe, and mop beneath your workspace. Tools may be returned damp.
- Towels and aprons: Do not shake them out. Wring out towels and wipe aprons with a damp sponge before hanging them up.
Visits, Passes, and Amenities
- Check-in: Check in and out with the Studio Staff when you come to work. Quick visits to pick up pieces, check a firing, or cover or uncover work do not require check-in. Active work, including sanding and trimming, counts toward your studio pass.
- Monthly passes: For one person only; they cannot be shared, split, or transferred. Extensions are available only for medical illness or emergencies supported by an official doctor’s note.
- Recommend a friend: If a friend books their first class or buys their first monthly pass through your recommendation, show us their booking for 10% off your next Mitt Studio purchase.
- Personal items: Do not leave belongings, including shoes or clothing, overnight. Items left behind go to lost and found and may eventually be donated.
- Amenities: Bring a drink or buy one here. Wi-Fi and ceramic books are available to studio users. Take private or loud calls outside the active work area. Maintenance and clay recycling may occasionally cause brief noise.
- Visitors and children: Friends and family may visit briefly at the start or end of a session or take a tour, but should not stay in the work area while you create. Children aged 5+ may create alongside an adult at standard pricing and under the same policies; teens aged 16+ may work independently. Babies in strollers may visit with prior approval, subject to space.
