Kiln Rentals
Members can book kiln space by the shelf, half kiln, or whole kiln. All rentals must be scheduled in advance. Students and ceramic artists from outside the studio may also be able to rent kiln space, depending on availability after member and student work is accommodated.
Before bringing in work for a kiln rental, please have your clay and glaze approved, then schedule a time to submit your work in person. DM or email us for more information.
Mitt Studio Firing Service Guidelines
Fees and Turnaround
- Payment and rates: Pre-payment is required for greenware submitted for bisque firing. The standard in-studio firing fee applies only to work made entirely at Mitt Studio. Work made elsewhere is subject to an external firing fee.
- Firing times: Work made at Mitt Studio is typically fired within 1–2 weeks. External work is usually ready for pickup within 2–3 weeks. Notifications are sent for external and class work only.
- Drop-off and pickup: External work must be dropped off and picked up during regular open hours. Please collect external work and class pieces within 30 days of unloading or notification.
Preparing Your Work Firing Results & Additional Charges
All outside clay and glaze must be approved before firing. Please show a staff member a photo confirming that your materials are compatible with the firing temperature.
Before glaze firing, wipe all glaze completely off the bottom of each piece. Pieces with glaze on the bottom will not be loaded into the kiln. For unusual shapes, an exception may be approved in advance if you provide suitable kiln supports.
To reduce the risk of cracking or explosions, compress walls well, support your forms, and avoid carving or trimming clay that is too dry. Aim for walls between 0.5 cm and 2 cm thick, and test unfamiliar clay and glaze combinations before using them on finished work.
Firing Results & Additional Charges
Ceramic firing can be unpredictable. Mitt Studio cannot guarantee results or offer refunds for pieces that crack, explode, or otherwise turn out unexpectedly. The firing fee still applies even if a piece does not survive firing.
You are welcome to re-glaze and re-fire a piece, but the glaze firing fee applies again. Re-fires have a slightly lower scheduling priority, and there are no re-fire discounts for external work. If you donate a finished piece to the Mitt Studio Charity collection, its glaze firing fee is waived.
If glaze from your piece melts onto a kiln shelf, an additional fee will be charged per piece based on the size of the melt. If a major firing accident damages shelves or other kiln equipment, you will be asked to compensate Mitt Studio for the damage. If another maker’s artwork is destroyed, you will also be asked to compensate them for their time and artistic effort.
